||> Summary
Buffy is getting into her groove as a counselor-type at Sunnydale High. She doesn’t have any credentials to speak of, but whatever. She gets a ton of students, but one girl stands out. Her name is Cassie and she tells Buffy that she will die on Friday. Buffy and company spend the whole week finding out why she will die as Cassie is psychic – not suicidal. As the day draws closer, Buffy learns of a cult that is going to sacrifice Cassie and saves her life twice in the ensuing fight only to lose her at the end anyway. This leaves the Scoobies with the question, “What do you do when you can’t help?”

This episode kind of reminded me of “I Only Have Eyes For You” in that there was a moral dilemma attached to the story and a mystical problem that mirrors a problem people struggle with in their own lives. Again, there was a nice mixture of funny and sad that reminds me of what BtVS was and still is. Although I noticed in this episode that there are no girls dying in the opening part of this episode, which I think is a little disjointed and confusing. Anyway, I really liked this episode. I thought Cassie was an appealing and fun character and that the other students at Sunnydale High are just as wacky as they were when Buffy was there. That kid who hit on Buffy sort of looked like Joss and the kid who ended up being the cult leader (you know, the one who used to be on Home Improvement?) was like an evil Larry. I’m also glad that Dawn is making friends and isn’t all whiny about things.
As for the end, I had a feeling that Cassie was going to die anyway. I knew that she’d get saved from the cult guys, but after the arrow that Buffy caught, I had my doubts that she would die so it was still a bit surprising that she did. And the final scene was very good with Buffy just doing her best to help, and maybe not being able to help them all. I’m also interested in whether or not Cassie’s little premonition to Spike will come true and what form it will take. Will she say she loves him? Will she merely forgive him? I don’t know. But I’m looking forward to this season even more because of it.
