Jonathan ||>
He
wakes up in the morning, brushes his teeth, puts his pants
on one leg at a time and goes to school. And gets a gun pulled
on him. Or tries to get a little nooky, and almost gets the
life sucked out of him. He is more than a slayer. He is .....
Jonathan.
I love Jonathan. "Why?" you might
ask, "He's only been in like, 10 episodes." The reason I love
Jonathan (besides his natural cheek-pinching cuteness) is
the perspective he gives to every episode he's in. |
Dorkily cute.

We all may identify with a member in the Scooby Gang in particular,
but I think we are all more like Jonathan in reality. He's just
your average kid doing the average things we all did in high school.
Except of course for that pesky Hellmouth, which kind of screws
everything up. But I think he reacts to them the same way we would.
He is the "everyman" in the show, which is why, even if he's a
bit character, I think he's integral to the way that we view the
characters in the Buffyverse and even Sunnydale as a whole.
Even
in Superstar, when he turned the entire world into
his fan club, he did it as just an outreach of his own insecurities.
And when it really came down to doing the right thing, he
didn't want to do it, but he changed the world back anyway.
Which is how anyone else would do it: reluctantly, but knowing
that it was the right thing to do. Even Buffy, who ended up
being his lapdog, wasn't really hurt by this because she knew
that if she were a normal girl caught in that situation, that's
how she would have acted as well. |
And oh so studious

So the next time you see Jonathan, whether it's slurping a smoothie
by the stairs, or giving an award, smile. Because Jonathan is
the Buffyverse's symbol for us, the normal people out there.
